Assembly of the African Union

Twelve years into Agenda 2063, the African Union’s ambitious plans face existential questions. The Second Decade of Acceleration—a policy framework meant to propel the continent toward sustainable industrialization, health equity, and integrated infrastructure—is today met with evolving and ever more demanding tests of unity, implementation, and vision. At SunMUN XVI, the Assembly of the African Union asks delegates to interrogate the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and to align its goals to the international vicissitudes contemporary to its second decade. How can development best be directed to address the on-the-ground realities of African development for Africans? What does it mean to implement a bold Second Decade of Acceleration in a rapidly changing global marketplace?

Inextricable from development is security. From the Sahel to the Horn of Africa, regional instability continues to sap institutional capacity and stall progress. Delegates must grapple with how to operationalize the African Union’s founding principles amidst a multipolar world order increasingly returning its attention to African affairs. What is the African Union’s role in pragmatically establishing continental peace and security? How can African Union peacekeeping best be leveraged to promote both development and stability?
